STEP 1 - MUSICIAN DICTIONARY
REMIX AND BOOTLEG
Remix:
Bootleg:
- Definition: A remix is an official version of a track that has been altered or reworked by another artist or producer. A remix usually differs from the original in terms of tempo, style, structure, and other musical elements.
- Legality: Remixes are typically created with the official permission of the copyright owner of the original track. Remix creators often receive the original tracks (stems) to work on their version.
Bootleg:
- Definition: A bootleg is an unofficial version of a track that has been modified without the consent of the copyright owner. Bootlegs often involve mixing, editing, or adding new elements to the original track.
- Legality: The creation and distribution of bootlegs are usually illegal, as they infringe on the copyright of the original track.
Music distribution
- Digital Platforms: Digital distribution includes placing music on streaming platforms (e.g., Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal), online music stores (e.g., iTunes, Amazon Music), and other services that allow music purchase or listening.
- Physical Media: Although less popular in the digital era, physical distribution still exists and involves the production and distribution of CDs, vinyl records, and sometimes cassettes. These media are sold in music stores, at concerts, or through the internet.
- Music Distributors: Music distributors, who act as intermediaries between artists and distribution platforms, play a role in the distribution process. For independent artists, there are specific distribution services (e.g., DistroKid, CD Baby, TuneCore) that allow placing music on multiple platforms for a one-time fee or a percentage of sales.
- Rights Management: An important part of music distribution is managing copyright and licenses. This includes rights to the sound recordings as well as the copyrights to the music compositions themselves. Distributors often assist in registering tracks with collective rights organizations (e.g., ASCAP, BMI in the USA or ZAiKS in Poland) to manage royalties.
- Monetization: Distribution is a key element in the monetization of an artist's work. Tracks available on streaming platforms and for purchase generate revenue from streams, digital and physical sales, and can also contribute to increasing an artist's popularity, which in turn can lead to other forms of income, such as concerts or merchandise sales.
